Anna Beer is a writer and
researcher who specialises in the literature and culture of the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries. She has published two literary biographies, one of them
is “My just Desire: The Life of Bess Raleigh, Wife to Sir Walter”. And that is what I am going to talking you about.
When I was surfing on the Internet, I found something that
might be interesting for you. After seeing the movie "Elizabeth: The
Golden Age", I've been thinking about what happened with Bess, lady of the
court of the Queen Elizabeth. And I found this book published in August 2003
that talks about the secret marriage between Bess and Sir Walter.
This is a biography of one the ladies of the privy chamber to
Queen Elizabeth I of England.
“Young, beautiful, and connected by blood to the most
powerful families in England”, Bess Throckmorton had as much influence over
Queen Elizabeth I as any woman in the realm, but she risked everything to marry
Sir Walter Raleigh. The secret marriage between Bess and the Queen’s
beloved cost both of them their
fortunes, their freedom, and very nearly their lives.
In this biography,
Bess Ralegh finally emerges from her husband’s shadow to stand as a dominant figure in her own right.
I have not had a chance to read it, but it seems
pretty interesting to me. Here I leave you a video of scenes from their romance in
the movie. (The name of the video should be Walter & Bess, but just ignore
it)
Hope you like it!! And leave me your comments.
what I most liked about your theme was the fact that Bess could emerge from the shadows of her husband Sir Walter Raleigh, especially I think that being a mother at those time was more difficult than in our time, because people at that time were much more cruel and criticized more if you not followed the ''good standards.''
ReplyDeletegreat job :)
I consider it quite risking what Bess did and I guess it is part of what she learnt from Elizabeth who was (or at least was shown in the movie) a strong and determined woman who was able to leave behind many things in order to get what she wanted. Anyway, this movie needed some romance, otherwise not many girls would see it xd
